No Matter Where You Live and Serve, Getting Ready for Christmas Starts with the Heart

Have you done a heart check lately? You know, taken a read on why you do what you do and how you’re feeling about it these days? The weeks leading up to Christmas are an ideal time to take stock and make adjustments. Why? Because of all the seasons of the year, this is the one when much of the world is aware of Jesus--the reason you do what you do.

The gospel that we live to proclaim is at its core a story of sacrifice. God gave the most precious One, his one and only son, for people who could not be less deserving of such a gift. For us. And today, in 2017, even though so many still refuse to obey God by believing his gospel, the story still takes center stage in much of the world as the year draws to a close.

The big question for each of us Christ followers this time of year, regardless of where we live, is this: How can I make the story of Jesus center stage in my sphere of influence? And your heart is the place to start answering this question. To help you get the conversation started, here are some questions to ask yourself as you prepare for Christmas 2017:

  • Oswald Chambers once observed that before God can use people greatly he must wound them deeply. Have you been wounded recently? Now would be a good time to journal and pray about it. How might God use that wounding in your life so that he can use you more effectively in someone else’s life?
  • As the angel was announcing Jesus’ arrival to those shepherds out in the field, he said, “I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.” Was there a time during the past year when you experienced great joy because Jesus arrived in your life?. Is it time for you to tell someone about that experience and explain where the joy came from? This might be the most important gift you give this Christmas.
  • While they may not know why, people give gifts to celebrate Christmas. As a follower of Jesus, you know that our gift giving is a reflection of God’s indescribable gift. His sacrificial gift. As you prepare to give this Christmas, will you pray this dangerous prayer: “Heavenly Father, how do you want me to give sacrificially this year?”

There may be other important questions for you to ask or conversations for you to have as you prepare for Christmas 2017. December is less than a month away. Why not get started today?
