Dr. Ron Harris

Vanguard University
Vice President for University Advancement

Ron Harris is a nationally recognized expert and early pioneer in the field of non-profit marketing. His academic articles on this subject in the early 1980s paved the way for the formation of departments of development in non-profits, large and small, in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, Ron serves as the vice president for university advancement of Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California.

Before joining Vanguard, Ron was the president of Ron Harris & Associates, a sought-after consulting firm specializing in fundraising, board development, mentoring of executive officers, and major gift officer training. He provided consulting services to colleges and universities, churches, and artistic performance groups, and also supported anti-human trafficking endeavors.

With over 35 years of fundraising experience, Ron has served in various roles—business professor, academic dean, vice president, and senior-vice president—at several universities. He earned his doctorate in higher education from Montana State University focused on educational/non-profit marketing, and his masters from Minnesota State University Mankato centered on effective business practices. Bethel University awarded him a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.

Ron has written over 100 articles in a variety of publications, including business journals, academic reference journals, newspapers, and general publications. Ron has served as editor of several journals including the Montana Business Journal, the California Business Education Journal, and the Sales and Marketing Newsletter.

David Lee

Ministry Development Officer

David is a ministry development officer for ECCU’s Colorado regional office. He has been serving ministries at ECCU for the last 18 years in various development and management positions.

David is also on the pastoral staff of a Denver-area church and has served on the pastoral staff of various churches for over 19 years. He has served as president of the Colorado Springs chapter of the Christian Leadership Alliance (formerly known as the Christian Management Association) and is completing his second term on their board.

He earned his Bachelors in finance from California State University Fullerton and his Masters in Christian education from Talbot School of Theology. As a Certified Treasury Professional®, David is committed to equipping ministries to be better informed and helping them be more effective at reaching their communities with the gospel.

John Butler

Attorney and Tax Counsel

John is an attorney who has specialized in serving exempt organizations. As tax counsel, he reviews tax and tax-related matters that arise during an audit or advisory engagement to formulate counsel and tax opinions on important operating and tax issues. He received both a bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia.

Prior to his association with CapinCrouse, John served with Campus Crusade for Christ for eight years as in-house legal counsel, and during his last three years served as director of the legal department.

To assist the larger not-for-profit and Christian communities, John actively participates in writing and speaking opportunities. Areas of focus include general tax issues, unrelated business income, benefit plans, compensation planning and reporting, missionary employment structures, charitable solicitations, and many more. He’s also had articles published in The Journal of Taxation of Exempt Organizations (now called Taxation of Exempts).

John is a member of the CrossGlobal Link Business Affairs Committee.

Rufus Harvey

Controller and Chief Financial Officer

Rufus Harvey is a business and income tax consultant and currently serves as the controller and CFO for Grace to You in Valencia, California. As a Certified Fraud Examiner and a Certified Fraud Specialist, he participates in embezzlement, shoplifting, and vandalism investigations, as well as employee theft and computer fraud investigations. He is a graduate of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Association of Certified Fraud Specialists.
